The dragon (Ryu) is arguably the most famous of all Japanese mythical creatures associated with water and the heavens. A symbol of strength and wisdom, it is impervious to fire and because of this, it was often adopted by the firemen of old Edo when they chose their own tattoos and also embroidered on their quilted protective coats.
